Throughout this context we analysed very well what is said in ASHRAE 62.1. Most legislative changes in Europe were based on this standard and realize that it addresses a really interesting topic, the relationship between IAQ and energy efficiency, and the existence of dynamic air purification systems, predicted this and bet that this was the key to the resolution of most problems. Remember that it is much more complicated the design in an HVAC system in a skyscraper than in a typical horizontal construction building more used in European cities. The space required for air ducts, the needs of fresh air due to closed space, large contamination of outside air in big cities, argue in favor of these technologies. Hence, the U.S. is more engaged with this technological nature and state of the art in air purification systems in the economy, following the path of using dynamic air purification systems. Incidentally certification of green buildings ASHRAE provides a significant bonus when using this type of systems.
A dynamic air purification system is a kind of catalyst, as we commonly see in the automobile industry interacting with the harmful elements of smoke/air in its path and through physical-chemical reactions changes air's characteristics in order to have in the end a more "pure" air, this is, decontaminated. In the case of viruses, bacteria and fungi it inactivates their activity by breaking connections between DNA chains; in the case of VOCs and formaldehyde, by catalytic air ionization and subsequent oxidation of these elements adsorbed on the catalytic surfaces. The difference to the traditional, existing in most air conditioning systems, is that the filtration is only static, like a net that retains the passing particles that drag these elements.
We invented the NPS (Nano Purifying System) to achieve these goals, and when installed in a system, Air Handling Unit (AHU), to use less outside air and use more recirculation of the interior. We can regulate the insertion of fresh outside air by the amount of people and their consumption of CO2. Making an analogy, we control the air quality in the same way like we control the temperature: a dynamic filter with an IAQ field probe.
For some years, in Europe, temperature regulation and control began to be a requirement in winter, then also passing to be in the summer. Nowadays, in most demanding places, there is also regulation of air's humidity, therefore the search for human comfort is a constant evolution. In the future, the control of IAQ will certainly be a reality/obligatory, not so for the purpose of comfort but also for human health; that we have no doubt!
